The KROKODIL Association is proud to announce that the first aid from the newly established SLAPP BACK Fund has been disbursed. This support has been provided to Dragana Arsić, an environmental activist from Novi Sad, who has been fighting for the protection of green spaces and the public interest for years.

We remind you that the SLAPP BACK Fund is dedicated to supporting activists facing SLAPP lawsuits (Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation). This fund was initiated after citizens, following our call for help in March this year, donated a significantly larger amount than was necessary to prevent the forcible detention of Aida Ćorović. Therefore, without your selfless help, the financial support we have provided this time to Dragana Arsić, a dedicated environmental activist from Novi Sad, would simply not have been possible.

Dragana Arsić has been the target of numerous SLAPP lawsuits due to her work defending the forests of Fruška Gora. In July 2020, a campaign of lies and insults against her began on the obscure site “Prismotra,” and pro-regime media readily spread this disinformation. Dragana Arsić filed a lawsuit against RTV Pančevo for defamation. After two years, the Appellate Court in Novi Sad ruled in her favor but also ordered her to pay court fees for this proceeding, amounting to a total of 86,000 dinars, contrary to usual practice. The SLAPP BACK Fund working group promptly reacted and secured funds for this purpose.

Almost simultaneously, during the KROKODIL Festival on Sunday, June 23, Bosnian actor and writer Feđa Štukan, one of the stars of this year’s festival, was denied entry into our country. The KROKODIL Association, also with the help of the SLAPP BACK Fund, engaged lawyer Miloš Janković to provide legal support to Feđa Štukan in this unfortunate situation.

The KROKODIL Association, with your support, continues to provide legal and financial assistance to activists fighting for the public interest.

This example shows the strength of solidarity and the importance of collective action in the fight against SLAPP lawsuits.
