11 Mar KROKODIL achieves great success at Lesen.Hören Festival in Mannheim!
On Saturday, March 8, KROKODIL presented its program “Spaces of Freedom: Showcasing Contemporary Literary Creativity from South-Eastern Europe” at the Lesen.Hören Literary Festival in Mannheim. Just like at the Berlin International Literature Festival, where we presented our program in September last year, the event was fully sold out, and the auditorium packed with an interested, engaged, and knowledgeable audience, further demonstrating a clear interest in literature from South-Eastern Europe and its place in a broader international context. We are grateful to everyone who joined us and intend to continue with similar programs on even more international literary platforms.
Before the main event, Vladimir Arsenijević and Milena Berić from KROKODIL Association took part in a conversation with Insa Wilke, program director of the festival. They discussed KROKODIL’s work, current socio-political situation in Serbia, role of culture in societal changes, as well as what Western Europe in particular could learn from our experiences.
Afterwards, during the dynamic evening program, four authors: Adelina Tërshani from Kosovo, Rumena Bužarovska from North Macedonia, Goran Vojnović from Slovenia, and Damir Karakaš from Croatia presented themselves through the combination of live readings in original languages supported by subtitles with translations in English, and short onstage interviews. The break in the middle of the program was reserved for a mini concert by the Serbian singer-songwriter Ana Ćurčin. The program was hosted by Mima Simić, herself an accomplished author and translator as well as dedicated LGBTQI activist who also happens to be a regular, idiosyncratic and well-loved presenter of KROKODIL Festival in Belgrade, Serbia.
The programme was realized in cooperation with The Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb) in Berlin.
