Żanna Słoniowska at the KROKODIL Center

Żanna Słoniowska at the KROKODIL Center

On Friday, November 1, at the KROKODIL Center, literature enthusiasts had the opportunity to meet the Ukrainian-Polish writer Żanna Słoniowska, who has been staying in Belgrade since October 28 as the 137th guest of KROKODIL’s Writers-in-Residence program. The event was moderated by Maja Vuković Biserko, while Mila Gavrilović, Żanna’s translator from the Polish Institute, translated the author’s words from Polish into Serbian.

Żanna spoke about her literary career, her various travels, and cultural festivals where she presented her work, as well as the unique aspects of writing at the crossroads of Ukrainian and Polish cultures. The audience had the chance to hear about her novels, including her best-known work The House with Stained Glass Windows, and her upcoming novel Wertepy, which is set to be published next year. Additionally, Żanna discussed her life in Kenya and the importance and influence of literature on West Africa and the Swahili language.

A special part of the evening was dedicated to discussing the current political situation in Central Europe and Ukraine, as well as the role of writers in preserving democratic values. Through personal anecdotes and viewpoints, Żanna raised important questions about the impact of literature on society. Attendees also had the opportunity to purchase her books, published by Dokaz Publishing, whose representatives were present in support of this prominent author’s work.

This inspiring encounter allowed visitors to experience literature from a new perspective and highlighted the significance of the written word in contemporary society.

Żanna’s stay in Belgrade was organized with the support of the Polish Institute in Belgrade.
