Awakened @Festival KROKODIL 2023

On Sunday, June 18, from 2:30 p.m. in the Pop Zone of the XV KROKODIL Festival, the program titled Awakened took place. Its aim was to raise important questions related to contemporary interpretations of fairy tales, putting in the foreground the position of female characters, both from a literary, social and psychological point of view.

The program began with the presentation of the book Žene, bajke, kraljice. Stories in this collection feature well-known female characters from fairy tales, placing them in contemporary and unusual contexts. In addition to a short talk about the collection, the authors Ana Đokić, Lada Žigo and Jadranka Pintarić performed a dramatization of the characters from their respective stories.

The collection Awake not sleepingReimagining fairy tales for a new generation, that also deals with the reinterpretation of female characters in fairy tales, questioning the position and rights of girls and women in society in the past and nowadays, was presented by Milana Rikanović, director of UN Women, Serbia, who also spoke about the importance of this project. We brought a couple of stories from this collection to life through readings by well known Serbian actresses Jelena Stupljanin and Nada Šargin.

We rounded off this program with a conversation in which the following participated: Jasminka Petrović, the most popular contemporary writer for children, Ana Đokić, writer and editor, and Đurđa Timotijević, psychologist and psychotherapist. The moderator was Iva Parađanin, journalist, founder of the Tampon zona podcast.

The participants shared with the audience their personal and professional experiences when it comes to the importance of fairy tales for the development of individuals, fairy tales’ social role and the place they occupy in the interpretation of cultural heritage, as well as the ways in which we can write and read fairy tales today.

Program was supported by UN WOMEN
