Duration of residence: 2 to 3 weeks (depending on the chosen location)

Residence period: May 2021 – July 2022

Literary residences ULYSSES’ SHELTER take place as part of the second phase of the project of the same name (2019-2022), which is co-financed through the European Comission’s Creative Europe Program – Culture sub-program. In its second phase, the network of literary residencies includes a total of five countries – Croatia, Greece, Slovenia, Serbia and the United Kingdom (Wales). The project partners are also the hosts of the residency program in their country:

1. Sandorf Publishing, Mljet (Croatia)

2. Thraka Publishing, Larissa (Greece)

3. Slovene Writers’ Association (SWA/DSP), Ljubljana (Slovenia)

4. Krokodil Association, Belgrade (Serbia)

5. Literature Across Frontiers (LAF), Wales (UK)

Project Ulysses’ Shelter and the residence network as its focal point focus on authors and literary translators of the younger generation.

The thematic subject of the second year of the Ulysses’ Shelter 2 project concerning all the residents chosen in this call is: coping with the challenges of the pandemic – how writers use their isolation experience in the current crisis. Most writers, poets and translators need to self-isolate in order to be able to produce a literary work, whether it is a poetry collection, a collection of stories or essays, a novel, or a literary translation. Giving up socializing, living and traveling alone, being low on finances and psychologically worn out while trying to be creative – these have all been everyday troubles for writers long before pandemic. Writers can now use these experiences to focus on their work maybe even more efficiently and also help other people who are not used to the current circumstances caused by relatively milder or harder lockdowns being in place around Europe. We invite writers to write about this phenomenon and contribute with their pre-pandemic and lockdown experiences.

Who can apply?

– Writers (prose and/or poetry) or literary translators

Eligibility criteria

– Applicants must have 1 book of their own work or of literary translation published

– Applicants must be no older than 40 (on deadline date)

– Applicants must be Serbian citizens

– Applicants must have advanced knowledge of English

– Applicants must be able to travel to one of the five participating countries, based on personal interest – live or remotely

– Applicants must write an entry (free format) for the Ulysses’ Shelter website Tovar.hr during their residency

– Applicants must be open to collaborate and work with other candidates and partners

– Applicants should be interested in fostering a relationship with the local audience (live and online)

What is offered?

– Participation in the program and going to a residency in 1 of the offered countries (in accordance with the epidemiological measures in each country and the recommendations for foreign travel in force at that time)[1]

– Fee (400 EUR gross including all taxes) and Subsistence (gross 300 EUR in Croatia, Greece, Serbia, Slovenia; 500 EUR in Wales)

– Covered accommodation and travel expenses (economy class)

– An introduction session, artist talk or other events/workshops (live and online)

– Promoting residents on the social media accounts, newsletters, project website Tovar.hr, as well as on all partners’ websites

– Support for the resident

– Networking possibilities and international visibility (live and online)

– A fantastic opportunity to benefit from a unique experience, to create new works, to introspect, to search for new inspirations, do research, to experiment and develop some new ideas.

Submission requirements?

A single PDF which includes:

1. CV or Resume (no longer than one page)

2. Motivational letter that includes an explanation of why the applicant wants to visit specific residencies and a plan of what they want to work on while there, e.g., working on a new novel, short story or poetry collection, translation, etc. (no longer than one page)

3. Bibliography

4. Preferences of residencies (each applicant should indicate the order of preferred residencies on a scale from 1 to 5, 1 being the top choice. If chosen for the residency, the committee will try to comply with the applicants’ wishes and dates when they are available to travel)

Selection procedure and publishing of results:

The Selection Committee, consisting of three members who are experts in the field, will suggest three applicants from Serbia to participate in the residency programme during 2021. The results will be announced on the project’s and partners’ websites and social media at the beginning of March 2021. The selected applicants will also receive a direct email.

Applicants must meet all of the above application requirements in order for their application to be evaluated.

By submitting their application, all applicants accept the terms of this call and agree to participate in the program live (in accordance with the epidemiological measures in each country and the recommendations for foreign travel in force at that time) and/or online / remotely.

The residency programme focuses on transnational mobility and audience development and will allow authors and literary translators of the younger generation to work, perform and present themselves in two different social and cultural contexts. Therefore, participation in residencies can bring new opportunities to establish contacts with other authors, translators, editors, publishers and representatives of various literary organizations from Croatia, Greece, Slovenia, Serbia and Wales. In addition to the residency itself, the selected candidates will participate in an accompanying program related to various literary activities and aimed at specific target groups in the local context where the residency takes place.

COVID-19

Each partner will closely follow the development of the Covid-19 pandemic in their respective country. Covid vaccines and negative Covid test results may be required for participants wishing to take part in the physical residencies, according to the travel guidelines in place at the time. The physical residencies and their accompanying live programme may be cancelled, postponed or switched entirely to digital formats if travel or event restrictions in the participating countries make it impossible for them to take place as initially planned.
