Eighth edition of literary festival Krokodil entitled KROKODIL Goes Global” will be held on Friday and Saturday, June 24 and 25 in the open-air arena in front of the Museum of Yugoslav History in the lush Belgrade suburb of Dedinje, and on June 27 in Niš, in Puppet theatre.

Festival KROKODIL will present the mixture of public readings, music and stage performances and provocative sofa-interviews. This year, some of the most renowned writers and artists from the region of Western Balkans will present themselves in front of Belgrade audience, such as one of the most renowned Serbian writers Svetislav Basara, well-known social historian Dubravka Stojanovic, and controversial Croatian theatre director Oliver Frljic.

Ever since its beginning, Festival aims at presenting regional authors and creativity. This year, we will host upcoming regional star Rumena Bužarovska from Macedonia, Danish/Bosnian literary sensation Alen Mešković, this year’s winner of European Literary Award Tanja Stupar Trifunović (B&H) and provocative Srdjan Srdic from Serbia. The festival evenings will be moderated by our regular tandem of presenters – Kruno Lokotar and Ivan Bevc.

List of authors does not end here! Festival will also present June guests of Krokodil’s Writer-in-residence program, journalist and prose writer Stepan Kucera from Czech republic and writer, journalist and travel writer Pedro Rosa Mendes (Portugal).

One of the sofa interviews, under the title „Skup. Protest! Revolucija?“ will be dedicated to discussions with representatives of different regional civic anti-governmental initiatives Ne da(vi)mo Beograd (Serbia), Šarena revolucija (Macedonia) and Pravo na grad (Croatia).

Sofa-interviews and readings will be intertwined with live performances of the Belgrade based avant-garde cabaret attraction Ah, Ahilej, founded in 1999. Ah, Ahilej will present their newest CD “Kapetane, brate”, with a series of humorous short clips entitled “Opšte mesto”, performed by Djordje Brankovic.

With a subtle doze of humor, irony and cynicism, these anti-heroes face all the side effects of contemporary society, from generational myths to pinkish dreams of turbo-capitalism, questioning some of the ever-present topics of the human race.

This year, Krokodil joins forces with literary network CROWD in a three-month literary tour OMNIBUS that presents over 100 writers from more than 37 countries of Asia and Europe.

Literary tour OMNIBUS presents a bus tour through Europe, from the villages to bustling megalopolises, and presents New European literature live through the deep dialogue between the writers, local audiences and literary scenes “from Arctic circle to the Mediterranean sea”.

On two bus stops in Serbia – in Belgrade and Niš – KROKODIL will present 14 contemporary European writers from countries such as Cyprus, Armenia, Germany, Greece, Finland, Great Britain etc.

Special flavor of this years’ festival is provided by the series of dynamic debates, which attract the attention of the academic society and the media. Debate programs will be held on June 24 and 25 in UK Parobrod (Kapetan-Mišina 6a).

June 24 from 12.00, Literary activism – a phrase or a new approach? Participants: Daniela Seel (kookbooks), Steven J Fowler (Enemies project), Kristina Posilović, Suvi Vali, Vesna Bjedov and Dragan Protić (Pesničenje), Olivera Stošić-Rakić (KCB), Bojan Savić Ostojić (Knjižuljak / Agon), Danilo Lučić (Kontrast)… Moderator: Ana Pejović from Association Krokodil. Language: English.

June 25 Art in postYugoslavia – in dire straits of ideology and politics. From 12 to 13.30: Dubravka Stojanović, Rumena Bužarovska and Tanja Stupar Trifunović

From 14 to 15.30: Oliver Frljić, Svetislav Basara and Želimir Žilnik. Moderator: Vladimir Arsenić, literary critic

On Monday, June 27, third and final evening of this year’s Krokodil will be held in the venue of Puppet theater in Niš. In front of the Niš audience, we will present writers Svetislav Basara, Rumena Bužarovska, Vladimir Tabašević, and seven poets from the “Omnibus” project, that travel to Sofia afterwards, interspersed with video entries from the likes of Njuz.net, Ciklotron and The Books of Knjige.

For the second year in a row, the festival has a humanitarian character. Together with Hemofarm Foundation, friend of this year’s festival, we will present the project PRODUŽI ŽIVOT (PROLONG LIFE) with the aim of raising awareness of the organ donation and transplantation, since the chances to receive the organs during lifetime are 20 times bigger than to actually be the donors. Participants of Krokodil will invite all the guests to be humane and responsible and to become owners of organ donation cards.

Serbia has three donors per a million citizens, and only 115.000 people has so far signed the donor cars, which puts Serbia to the very bottom of the European list of organ donors.

Festival KROKODIL 2016 is supported by: Ministry of Culture and Information to the Republic of Serbia, Hemofarm Fondacija, Secretariat for Culture of the City of Belgrade, Forum Stadtpark/Crowd Network, Embassy of Czech Republic in Belgrade, Institut Camois Serbia, UK Parobrod, Museum of Yugoslav History, Erste bank Serbia and Puppet theatre Niš.
